Living history
Old Cowtown Museum uses “living history” to tell the story of life in Wichita, and the Southern Plains from the last half of the 19th century. Costumed history interpreters carry out daily life at the blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, historic homes, drovers camp and other sites throughout the grounds. They interact with visitors and chat about day-to-day activities, culture, manners, family issues, politics and people who lived during the late 19th century.
On a typical day, guests have the opportunity to participate in activities such as working the ripsaw in the carpenter shop, feeling animal skins at the hunter and trader camp, and operating the blower on the forge at the blacksmith shop. In the residential area, visitors learn about things such as cooking on a wood stove and how families entertain their guest. They also have the opportunity to test their skill with the toys in the parlor. The five-acre 1880s DeVore Farm also provides experiences for interaction and learning.
